When is a fixed or removable dental brace suitable for adults?

What types of dental braces for adults are available?

• Fixed internal braces (lingual braces): Braces of this type are attached to the inside of the teeth and are therefore not visible.
• Removable aligner trays: Thin, flexible, invisible trays from Invisalign® are precisely fitted to your teeth and correct various types of dental misalignments.
• Removable loose braces: Loose braces for adults, consisting of a plastic base and small clasps, are attached to the teeth.

How long does the treatment take?

The duration of the treatment depends on the degree of jaw and dental misalignments as well as any accompanying issues. How much does adult braces cost?

The treatment costs depend on the degree of jaw and dental misalignments as well as the type of braces. The following breakdown is meant to provide you with a rough estimate:

• Fixed external braces: €2,500 to €8,000
• Fixed internal braces (lingual braces): €6,000 to €10,000
• Removable aligner trays from Invisalign®: €3,000 to €8,000
• Removable loose braces: from €300

Does public health insurance cover the costs?

Unfortunately, patients who are older than 18 years old must bear the treatment costs themselves. Public health insurance only covers the costs for severe cases of dental and jaw misalignments that require surgical intervention. Typically, public insurers cover fixed external braces with brackets made of ceramic or metal. Additional costs for other types of adult braces must be covered by the insured individuals themselves. If there is coverage under a private health insurance or dental supplementary insurance policy, the extent to which treatment costs are covered can vary significantly between insurers. We recommend that you inquire individually with your private insurer.
