Treatment procedure

Specialist dental practice for orthodontics Munich

Initial Consultation & Diagnosis

Before we can make any decisions in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, we would like to get to know you personally and gain a first impression during an initial consultation. During this appointment, we aim to provide you with the best possible advice and address your individual questions.

We will examine your or your child's teeth and assess the tooth alignment, bite, and the function of the entire masticatory apparatus using an intraoral 3D scan (3Shape TRIOS®). Additionally, we will analyze the position of your tongue during swallowing and speaking, as well as the jaw joint. Together with you, we will discuss the findings, whether orthodontic treatment is advisable at the given time, and how it could proceed. If we decide on orthodontic treatment together, we will also take photos and X-rays.

For your first visit to Dr. Krause & Colleagues – your specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich – you can fill out the digital medical history form on our website in advance.

Discussion Appointment

Your treatment records have been evaluated, and a detailed treatment plan with the recommended therapy and cost breakdown has been created. We, at Dr. Krause & Colleagues, your specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, take the time to thoroughly explain the planning, possible treatment alternatives, and all the individual steps of your treatment. Additionally, we will show you all the planned treatment devices. We will provide you with comprehensive information regarding cost coverage by your health insurance and any supplementary services. If we jointly agree on the individual treatment plan, we will submit it to your health insurance for approval for those with statutory insurance. Privately insured individuals will receive the individual treatment plan for submission to their insurance company or government aid agency. The average processing time for the approval of the treatment plan is approximately 4-6 weeks.

Treatment

Once the cost coverage has been clarified with your insurance provider, we promptly commence the treatment. The application of a fixed orthodontic brace usually takes about two hours in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, whereas the insertion of removable devices such as Aligners from Invisalign® Munich can be completed in just a few minutes. From this point on, regular appointments are scheduled every four to ten weeks for the control and activation of the appliances with your orthodontist, Dr. Sebastian Krause, in Munich. During these check-up appointments, you should always bring your removable brace, along with any additional accessories and cleaning materials for a fixed orthodontic brace.

Your active participation is crucial for the success of your orthodontic treatment and achieving your desired smile. Additionally, throughout the orthodontic therapy in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, you should also schedule dental check-ups and prophylaxis appointments with your dentist every three to six months.

Adaptation Period

If you have received a fixed orthodontic brace in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, you may experience some discomfort in your teeth and tooth-supporting structures during the first 8-14 days after the brackets and archwire have been attached. However, this sensitivity to pressure usually diminishes over time, and most patients adapt well to the brackets. In case you develop sore spots, you can apply a small amount of wax to those areas to prevent irritation of your cheeks, lips, or tongue. In most cases, these sore spots will resolve on their own within a few days.

Diet

If you have a fixed orthodontic brace, it's important to be cautious with hard foods like crispy bread crusts, carrots, or hard apples. You should cut these foods into smaller pieces to avoid brackets from coming loose when biting into them. Other foods that are not suitable for fixed braces include sticky, crispy, and hard items like popcorn, caramel, and chocolate, among others. If you have invisible aligners from Invisalign® Munich, you can eat whatever you like. Simply remove the invisible aligners for your meals. Unlike traditional braces, you won't have any discomfort in your mouth. Depending on the meal, be sure to thoroughly clean your teeth and interdental spaces after eating before putting the aligners back in.

Cleaning

During orthodontic treatment in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, special attention should be given to cleaning and dental care. Cleaning is more elaborate than regular oral hygiene, which should be done every day. Removable braces should be cleaned with a toothbrush and toothpaste, and any deposits that may accumulate over time due to mineralization from saliva can be removed by soaking them in diluted vinegar water. There are also special cleaning tablets available on the market designed for removable braces.

With fixed braces, brackets and other components create small crevices where plaque can more easily accumulate. Plaque and food residues can lead to cavities and, in the long term, the formation of tartar may also result in periodontal disease. To ensure that your teeth not only achieve a pleasing alignment but also remain healthy during orthodontic treatment in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich, it's important to regularly clean and apply fluoride using:

- Dental floss
- Elmex fluoride gel
- Manual or electric toothbrushes
- Interdental brushes for cleaning between teeth

Propylaxis

Ideally, after orthodontic treatment and the patient's active cooperation, the teeth are healthy and free from cavities. The goal of your orthodontist in Munich is not only to correct your dental misalignment but also to keep your teeth healthy. To achieve this, we offer you professional teeth cleaning during your treatment in our specialist dental practice for orthodontics in Munich.

End of Treatment - Retainer & Retention

Orthodontic treatment doesn't end with the removal of fixed braces or the end of the wear time for aligners like Invisalign® Munich. To secure the results of orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to stabilize the achieved ideal state for a certain period after the active treatment. Therefore, after active treatment, depending on the type of misalignment, the retention phase begins. To stabilize the new tooth positions, there are different options. One option is to wear a retainer plate for some time, which is a removable brace. Another option is to use a fixed retainer. Retainers are very delicate wires that are glued behind the front teeth. The name of the wire also describes its function (retainer = holder or stabilizer). This wire permanently fixes the front teeth from the outside, ensuring they stay in the new desired position and preventing the teeth from shifting again.

Retention is typically completed when physical growth has ended, which is around the mid-twenties. Some dental misalignments require lifelong retention.
