Misalignments

Definition & treatment method

Slight narrowing

Play

What is meant by a mild malocclusion?

A mild malocclusion refers to teeth that are only slightly crooked and misaligned. You might actually like your smile - but want to love it? Often, there isn't enough space in the jaw for all the teeth to align properly next to each other.

As a result, teeth may protrude, overlap, tilt forward or backward, stand rotated, or even be pushed out of the bone.

What problems are associated with a mild malocclusion?

A mild malocclusion often complicates dental hygiene and thus promotes plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria. The consequences can be serious forms of cavities and gum disease. Usually, a mild malocclusion becomes more pronounced with age. Contrary to widespread belief, wisdom teeth do not play a role, but rather age-related changes in the body and jaw.

How can mild malocclusions be treated?

Mild malocclusions can be treated with transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign®, with lingual braces (Win), or with external brackets. Often, minor measures are sufficient to shift the teeth into the desired position. Treatment at your orthodontist in Munich usually only takes a few months and is subsequently secured for life with fixed and removable retainers (Vivera).

Teeth gaps

Play

What is meant by the dental misalignment "gaps"?

The misalignment "gaps" refers to visible spaces between the teeth. This can be caused by a mismatch between the size of the jaw and the teeth, or by missing teeth, leading to adjacent teeth tipping into the gap.

What problems are associated with gaps?

Food particles often accumulate in the gaps between teeth, leading to inflammation of the gums and gum disease. Gaps can also cause issues with speech, eating, and aesthetics.

How can gaps be treated?

Gaps between teeth can be treated with transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign®, with lingual braces (Win), or with external brackets. Removable retainers are less suitable for this purpose.

Crowding

Play

What is meant by a dental misalignment "crowding"?

Crowding occurs when there isn't enough space in the jaw for all the teeth to align properly side by side and in the correct position. As a result, teeth may protrude, overlap, tilt forward or backward, stand rotated, or even be pushed out of the bone.

What problems are associated with crowding?

Crowding often complicates dental hygiene, promoting plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria. The consequences can be serious forms of cavities and gum disease. Usually, the misalignment becomes more pronounced over time.

How can crowding be treated?

Crowding can be treated with transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign®, with lingual braces (Win), or with external brackets. Removable retainers are less suitable for this purpose.

Deepbite

Play

What is meant by an "overbite"?

An overbite occurs when the upper teeth overlap significantly with the lower teeth, making them less visible. Many patients have a slight overbite.

What problems are associated with an overbite?

An overbite can cause the lower teeth to bite into the palate and/or lead to improper loading, which negatively affects the tooth support apparatus.

How can overbites be treated?

In our orthodontic practice in Munich, we use transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign®, lingual braces (Win), or external brackets to treat overbites. In extreme cases, combined therapies and the use of mini-implants may be indicated.

Underbite

Play

What is meant by an "underbite"?

An underbite can involve both hereditary and developmental factors. In this condition, the lower teeth are positioned in front of the upper teeth when the jaws are closed. Often, externally, a prominent chin and thin upper lips are noticeable.

What problems are associated with an underbite?

The ability to bite and nasal breathing are often restricted. It frequently leads to misalignments in the entire chewing apparatus

.

How can underbites be treated?

Depending on the age, severity, and remaining growth of the patient, functional appliances, removable braces, transparent plastic aligners such as Invisalign® Aligners, lingual braces, or external brackets can be used. Combined treatments, conducted collaboratively with our interdisciplinary colleagues, are also possible

Crossbite

Play

What is meant by a "crossbite"?

A crossbite can occur in the front, on the side, or in combination. In this condition, the upper teeth are positioned further inward than the lower teeth. Externally, a protruding chin or a slightly asymmetrical face is often observed.

What problems are associated with crossbites?

Crossbites can lead to chewing and jaw problems due to misalignments. They can also affect speech and increase tooth wear. Additionally, crossbites can cause issues with speech, eating, and aesthetics.

How can crossbites be treated?

Crossbites can be treated with transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign® Aligners, lingual braces (Win and Incognito), or external brackets (Damon System). In complex cases, surgically combined treatment methods may be considered, which we can offer you as a specialized orthodontic practice in Munich through interdisciplinary collaboration with our colleagues.

Open bite

Play

What is meant by an "open bite"?

In an open bite, some teeth cannot make contact with their opposing teeth (antagonists). Depending on the severity, this can make biting and chewing difficult or even impossible.

What problems are associated with an open bite?

Besides misalignments and difficulty in biting, an open bite often accompanies mouth breathing, leading to reduced saliva flow and consequently poorer oral hygiene, which can result in cavities.

How can an open bite be treated?

An open bite can be treated with transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign Aligners, lingual braces (Win), or (esthetic) external brackets. In some cases, tongue shields or speech therapy may also be helpful.

Alternating dentition

Play

What is a mixed dentition?

The mixed dentition is not a condition of dental misalignment, but a natural process in which the milk teeth fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth. This usually occurs between the ages of 6 and 12. Since overcrowding and other problems often occur during this process, it is advisable to seek orthodontic evaluation from the age of six. This allows for early intervention and optimal utilization of the patient's growth. This approach enables early treatment of deteriorations, correction of incorrect swallowing and speech habits, and prevention of risks such as accidents caused by severely protruding upper teeth.

How can a mixed dentition be treated?

Loose braces alone or in combination with fixed braces are suitable options. Transparent plastic aligners, such as Invisalign® aligners, as well as lingual braces (Win) are also possibilities.
