Costs & coverage by health insurance companies

Orthodontic consultations and check-ups are covered by health insurance at any age. Whether a treatment is covered by health insurance (public, private, or dental supplementary insurance) and whether any additional private costs may arise can be clarified individually before the treatment. Both publicly and privately insured patients at our orthodontic practice in Munich receive a detailed treatment plan including cost breakdown. In any case, you will know the costs of your orthodontic treatment beforehand and whether these will be reimbursed (partially).

Public Health Insurance

Up to the age of 18, ongoing orthodontic treatment is typically covered by public health insurance. The existing dental or jaw misalignment is crucial in this regard. Public health insurances cover the costs for orthodontic treatment from a defined degree of treatment need. This means that a certain degree of dental and/or jaw misalignment must be present for the health insurance to be liable to pay. Against this background, a classification is made according to the so-called orthodontic indication groups (OIG). From a treatment need degree of 3, the health insurance covers the costs of orthodontic treatment. Initially, 80% of the costs are covered by the health insurance. The remaining 20% must be paid by the insured as their own contribution. You will receive invoices for the own contribution from your practice, Dr. Sebastian Krause & Colleagues. Keep them safe so that you can submit them to your health insurance after completing the treatment. The health insurance then reimburses you the own contribution after the treatment is completed - thus, the insured person receives back the 20% share of costs paid out during the treatment. This is intended to motivate the completion of the treatment. Services not listed in the catalog of public health insurances must be paid for by the patient themselves if desired. An existing dental supplementary insurance may cover these costs.

Private Health Insurance

Whether your private health insurance covers the cost of braces depends on your individual contract terms. We at Dr. Krause & Colleagues cannot provide a general answer to this, as there is no uniform set of rules among private health insurances. There is also no scheme (orthodontic indication groups - OIG) for clarifying cost coverage. Upon request, your insurance can inform you in advance of your visit to the orthodontic practice in Munich about the general extent of cost coverage for orthodontic services.

Dental Supplementary Insurance Dental supplementary insurance can cover the costs of the entire orthodontic treatment or services not listed in the catalog of public health insurances. Here too, the extent of coverage depends on the individual contract terms. Our tip for you: Since known findings are often excluded from cost coverage before taking out dental supplementary insurance, we recommend that you take out dental supplementary insurance before your first visit to the orthodontist in Munich.

Braces and Taxes

Self-paid medical expenses that exceed a certain amount per year can usually be claimed in the tax return. This way, you may get back a portion of the costs. It's best to consult your tax advisor.
